  Having recently turned 27, Li Chenxi has reached the age at which unmarried women in China are labelled 'sheng nu' or 'leftover women'.

It's a stigma that carries deep ramifications within her social life, workplace and especially among her family. But with a blossoming career in Beijing, Li Chenxi has no desire to get married.

China has a disproportionate number of males to females (121:100) so I doubt she will be unmarried long. Most Chinese women don't start to panic until they're 30, not 27. This article is ill-informed.

This is so NOT news in China. We read similar stories in almost every New Year's season in recent years(some were just made up). Even when I was single and my folks kept asking questions, the idea of renting a fake boyfriend had never come to my mind. Those who did are so weak, to put it a nice way. They can't take the nagging and pressure from parents and relatives(and sometimes nosy neighbors), and this is what they come up? Come on! Time to grow up and deal with it! Well, you may wanna say nicer and gentler words to your parents to avoid the hurt, but others, just smile it off. It's NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS! Privacy and freedom are human rights. From what i see, it's not that Chinese don't respect this, it's just that they didn't get it either growing up so it's never in their mind. They simply never had the concept. They think they're showing cares, concerns, or "gossip" to say the worst. Now they see what they get: a fake in-law-to-be and a lying child.
Things like this take generations to change. I hope more and more young people can simply speak it up: I'm single. No questions allowed. No worries needed. Thank you!

这在中国都不算新闻。最近几年每到新年时都能看到类似报道（有些是虚构的）。而我单身时，朋友们也会不断的问我问题，但我从来没想过租个假男友。这么做的人实在是有点弱。他们受不了父母亲戚（有时候是爱管闲事的邻居）的唠叨和压力，然后就想出了这个办法？得了吧。是时候成熟点了，勇敢面对吧。你可以对你的父母说一些好听温柔的话语来安抚他们，但是其他人就不用管他们了。和他们一点关系都没有。私密和自由是人权。在我看来，并不是说中国人不尊重私密和自由，而是因为中国人在成长的过程中就没有获得这些东西，所以脑子里没有这些概念。他们以为自己是在对他人表达关心和关注，或者难听点就是在“八卦”。现在好了了吧，结果是：一个假的未来姻亲和一个撒谎的孩子。
这样的事情要几代人的时间才能发生改变。我希望越来越多的年轻人能大胆说出来：我单身，不要问我问题。也没必要担心，谢谢！

Obviously, this was a dramatization, since an entire cam crew went along.  But then, I've read elsewhere that unmarried ( 'left over') higher class, educated, professional females are a real problem in developed coastal China. All kinds of shenanigans probably go on in R/L.  Is it possible, since educated, decent looking women are involved that some Chinese could take up polygyny? It might help their demographics in more ways than one.  Or, how many of these women would be willing to emigrate to the West, very possibly to enter into  interracial marriage with educated, professional whites, latinos or blacks? Many American men are AOK with Asian women for dates and mates. Some even prefer them.

Stand tall!  When someone asks why you are not married (in this particular case), say, "Because I don't wish to marry!"  Say it like you mean it.  Tell other women to do the same so that it starts to become socially acceptable.  BE THE (social) CHANGE YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD.  China and many other countries have no shortage of children.  If she is happy, so be it.
