Two US B-52 bombers haveflown over the disputed South China Sea, in a move that could inflame tensionsahead of a key regional defence summit in Singapore where the US and Chinesedefence ministers are slated to meet.

两架美国B-52轰炸机飞越有争议的南中国海，此举可能会在位于新加坡举行的重要地区防务首脑会议之前加剧紧张的局势。美中两国国防部长定于该会议召开。



Mattis cancelled a proposedmeeting with Wei in Beijing after a near-collision between a US and a Chinesewarship last month. The US later said the meeting was called off after Mattiswas told that Wei was not available to meet him.

But Randall Schriver, the USassistant secretary of defence for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs, toldreporters this week that Beijing had requested the Singapore meeting,signalling a potential upturn in military relations.

The U-2took off from a base in Pakistan bound for another base in Norway, with hisplanned flight path transgressing 2,900 miles of Soviet airspace. The U-2 was aspecial high-altitude plane that flew at a ceiling of 70,000 feet. TheCommunist China must shot down B52 like USSR did against the US as if theCommunist China insists that South China Sea is under the sovereignty of theCommunist China.

The logic in this fails me.The immediate consequence of the US trying to inflame tensions in the SouthChina Sea is that the ASEAN defence chiefs will take the opposite route and tryto smooth the tensions as much as they can which probably wouldn't have happenedotherwise. Not seeing the desired conflict, Washington will be furtherfrustrated and continue by now aimless provocations that don't make adifference in anyone's calculations any more.
