China may continue to engagemore with Saudi Arabia if Washington imposes sanctions over the disappearanceand presumed murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, but it cannot supplantUS arms sales as President Donald Trump believes, analysts say.

分析人士说，如果华盛顿对沙特记者贾迈勒·哈肖吉失踪和谋杀事件实施制裁，中国可能继续与沙特阿拉伯进行更多接触，但美国总统唐纳德特朗普认为，它无法代替美国对沙特的军火销售。

US Secretary of State MikePompeo arrived in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday as Washington weighs actions againstRiyadh over the fate of Khashoggi, a US resident and vocal critic of the Saudiregime who vanished two weeks ago. But Trump has been reluctant to supportsanctions, citing the impact to a US$110 billion arms deal he helped brokerlast year.

美国国务卿迈克·庞培星期二抵达沙特阿拉伯，当时华盛顿正在就两周前失踪的沙特政权的美国居民、直言不讳的批评家哈肖吉的命运对利雅得进行权衡。但特朗普一直不愿意支持制裁，理由是这回影响他去年帮助的一笔1100亿美元的军火交易。



But in the military realm,China’s arms exports to Saudi Arabia lag far behind those of the US and itsEuropean allies. Beijing exported only around US$20 million in arms last yearcompared to US$3.4 billion from Washington, according to data from theStockholm International Peace Research Institute, a Swedish think tank.

但在军事领域，中国对沙特阿拉伯的武器出口远远落后于美国及其欧洲盟国。根据瑞典智库斯德哥尔摩国际和平研究所的数据，去年北京仅出口了约2000万美元的武器，而华盛顿出口了34亿美元。

Jonathan Fulton, assistantprofessor of political science at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi, said China hadgrown more serious in its regional arms relationships with Gulf states inrecent years, with the potential to serve as a “wedge” as US-Saudi relationsfrayed. Along with Riyadh’s previous indications that it was willing toconsider funding in yuan, increased arms sales would be a “natural progression”of their relationship, he said.

We’re seeing a lot moreengagement both ways.”

But as evidence piles upthat Saudi Arabia ordered Khashoggi’s assassination, which the governmentdenies, the backlash is getting louder. A bipartisan group of US senators havepressured Trump to enact sanctions and key corporate sponsors have pulled outof the high-profile “Davos in the Desert” investment forum to be held in Riyadhthis month.

Sun Degang, a Middle Eastexpert at Shanghai International Studies University, said that if the US andSaudi Arabia were to part ways, it would be possible for China to developdeeper economies ties with the Arab nation, including using the yuan to tradeoil.

上海外国语大学的中东问题专家孙德刚说，如果美国和沙特阿拉伯分道扬镳，中国就有可能与阿拉伯国家发展更深层次的经济关系，包括利用人民币进行石油贸易。


“But from what we see now,US-Saudi tensions have remained at a diplomatic level and haven’t deterioratedat a fundamental level,” he said.

When someone is killedinside a Consulate, which is a secured premise, it cannot be the work of arogue assassination. If the victim is dismembered inside the Consulate, it is agruesome act that is coordinated and arranged within the Consulate. America willtry to camouflage the truth in collaboration with the Saudi government as theeconomic losses will be too significant for America, and the victim willprobably be a sacrificial lamb to the cause.
