The US Justice Department has charged companies in China and Taiwan with stealing trade secrets from a US semiconductor company, as the government steps up efforts to combat what it contends is Chinese technology theft.

The Justice Department accused the defendants – the Chinese state-owned Fujian Jinhua Integrated Circuit Co, its Taiwanese partner United Microelectronics and three individuals – of stealing trade secrets from Micron Technology, America’s largest memory-chip maker, according to an indictment unsealed on Thursday.

UMC has been pinning its hope in China and has in the past tried to circumvent Taiwan’s China investment restriction. It also had a number of inside trading charges against the company and senior management. Not a good company at all. Good thing they are now exposed for conspiring with the Chinese. Serve them right.

China can’t buy tech companies but USA can ? US Qualcomm offer to buy NL NXP but SG Broadcom can’t not buy. When China tried to buy Lumileds USA gov said not. In al innovation expos, you can find booth from #FinladWorks program to tech developers and entrepreneurs go to live and develop companies in Finland. That’s mean that one former skill worker can’t emigrate to Finland ? You can buy tech companies and you can pay more, but is all political and economic. Political to win local votes and economic to impose penalties. Easy money for governments.

China can buy companies, but not with government funds. It’s another form of government subsidies which incurred unfair competition!

Why is it common practice for Chinese firms to steal technologies developed in the USA, Japan or Europe? investing in research and innovation is the long term solution. Cheating and copying someone else can only get you so far.

The article lacks details of the case but the main grievance is that some Micron's Taiwanese subsidiary's key employees left to work for a Taiwanese company UMC which later started co-operating with the Mainland Chinese Jinhua, all developing DRAM chips.
Micron basically insists that its former Taiwanese employees are not allowed to be employed by any other company than Micron if they want to develop DRAM chips. Attempts to restrict employees' ability to freely choose their employer are common in the US but almost never legal.
If UMC has broken Micron's patents, then it's another matter. But trying to coerce and bully employees to devote their professional expertise in the service of a single American company as if they were modern serfs is of course nothing but nonsense.
