China’s young consumers are snubbing foreign brands amid growing national pride, says Credit Suisse

China is seeing the emergence of a generation of consumers who are more likely to opt for home-made brands, spurred by a growing sense of national pride, according to a survey by Credit Suisse.

The old adage that foreign brands are superior no longer holds true for young Chinese shoppers, who are increasingly showing a “domestic brand bias” amid “a degree of nationalism” in the world’s biggest consumer market, the study found.

Chen believes the trend is partly attributable to a push by the authorities to encourage residents to feel more attached to the Chinese culture, including the opening of more Confucianism institutes, while another factor is likely to be the growing influence of Chinese companies on the global stage.

I have noticed this for a while. Their parents' generation who went through the harsh years tend to favor foreign brands for the perceived quality, but those born after the 90s grew up during the era of rising China and tend to be more nationalistic and confident about their own country.
They are also more likely to snub goods made in Japan and the US when they see these countries as being hostile. Recently there has been an almost universal snub of Korean goods and services when the THAD missile system became an issue.

This is the most heartening things I've heard for a long time. I've hoped for the Chinese people to regain their sense of self-confidence and self-reliance. Only after the Chinese people have regained their self-confidence and self-reliance can they start to trust their own ability to build their own domestic economy which has the potential to become the biggest economy in the world by far. For some 200 years the Chinese intelligentsia have been denigrating Chinese culture and Chinese values and portrayed the Chinese people as a degraded people represented by Ah-Q. Ah-Q had an oversize sense of his own self-importance that was based on ignorance. Because of Ah-Q, the Chinese intellectuals were misguided to think that the way to revitalize China was to be humble and to learn from the West. Qing Dynasty implemented the "Westernization Movement" which ultimately turned China into a de facto colony. The way to revitalize China is not to learn from the West but to establish a superior educational system to create millions of smart Chinese scientists and engineers so that they can develop the most advanced technologies to surpass the West and so raise China up with greater productivity to produce superior products thus making China rich and powerful. This means self-reliance.

I only travel too and buy brands from countries along the Belt Road Silk Road Route (China, Pakistan, Iran, Cambodia, Kazakstan, Mongolia, Russia, North Korea, Dagestan, Armenia, Syria, Iraq, Turkey, Belarussia, Tajikistan etc) the brands here are new, rare in the western world, unique and exciting. In economics, it is productivity that creates wealth. China can create any amount of money. Selling goods and services to the Chinese people is as profitable as selling them to foreigners. It is because the CPC leaders don't understand economics that they think like you do. They think Chinese are poor and have to sell their products to rich foreigners. In the end, they inflate the exchange rate which turn Chinese exports into free gifts for foreigners while giving more more money in terms of RMB to the Chinese exporters. In their ignorance they think their "profit" comes from the rich foreigners. They have no idea that the "profit" the Chinese exporters get all come from the CPC. I bet you have no idea what I'm talking about.

If a Chinese exporter exported $1 billion of products and the exchange rate is 6.3 yuan per dollar than he gets 6.3 billion yuan from the Chinese bank. If the exchange rate is 3 yuan per dollar then he gets only 3 billion yuan from the Chinese bank. The extra 3.3 billion yuan did not come from foreign importers but from Chinese bank. Therefore, by inflating the exchange rate Chinese export is a free gift to foreigners and all the profits Chinese exporters make come from the Chinese bank which ultimately come from the Chinese government.

First of all, this article talks about an emerging trend. It shows the younger generation are more confident of domestic product, a reflection of better choices and qualifies these days. As for international recognitions, all other Asian based but now internationally recognized name brands such as Sony, Toyota, Samsung, etc. have gone through stages before they achieve the name recognition.
