TOKYO —Media reports that Emperor Akihito is hoping to abdicate triggered calls on Wednesday from ruling and opposition parties for work on revising the law to make it possible for an emperor to relinquish the throne while still alive.

“I think we need to revise the Imperial House Law” Tsutomu Sato the head of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s Diet Affairs Committee told reporters referring to the 1947 law that has no provision for a reigning emperor to abdicate.

The Imperial House Law’s Article 4 says that “upon the demise of the Emperor the Imperial Heir shall immediately accede to the Throne.” But there is no provision in the law for an emperor to abdicate.

He is The Emperor I guess he may do as he pleases at least now after living all his live under the constant scrutiny of the press. I wonder how the royal family put up with it.

Seriously if he is the emperor and the symbol of the nation and the head of state then who is anyone to tell him what to do? The imperial family members' lives are much harder than most people imagine. If the emperor wants to live out his last days in peace then all those so called nationalists in the LDP should show how much they truly love their country by honouring the wishes of its symbol and head of state.

Hahaha. The Nippon Kaigi and other right-wingers must be imploding again that their own god is not doing what they want him to; like when he said quite happily there is Korean blood in the Imperial veins. At BEST I bet they are hoping they can lock up talks on it until the Emperor dies and then avoid the issue altogether as they did with discussion on Aiko inheriting the throne (well of course in that case waiting to see if a male heir was born). I like the Emperor; he's a down to earth man. I hope he abdicates of his own volition regardless of the dithering by the 'corporeal world'.

Yes like some people above I also wonder if the "abdication" is due to some sort of pressure being applied by ultra-rightists groups who do not like the Emperor's veiled criticism of Abe's ultra-nationalism. Maybe they think the son will be easier to manipulate. But maybe being a former Emperor will give him more freedom to make criticism that is not so veiled.

The roll of the Emperor still remains popular amongst many Japanese and unless you're a Japanese citizen you shouldn't have anything to say about it.
