The B.C. government says it will clear the way for Vancouver to impose a vacancy tax on empty homes which will make it the first major city in Canada to implement such a penalty amid skyrocketing rents and growing concerns about foreign investment and speculation.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson previously called on the B.C. government to allow the city to implement a tax on vacant homes which he said could help free up rental stock or raise money to fund new housing. He gave the province an ultimatum warning that the city would act on its own on Aug. 1 if it had to.

Mr. Robertson noted that a city study concluded there were about 10800 empty residential units homes in the province almost all condos as of 2014. The new tax will apply only to owners of units that are “clearly not being lived in” for the whole year he said not to people who live in a home for part of the year and leave it empty for the rest of the time. He added that the city will consult with the public and housing experts before settling on a definitive rate for the tax which he wants in place by next year.

The politicians could care less about affordability. It's not as if wages are increasing in any meaningful way in Vancouver or Toronto.- this is purely a function of illegal foreign money cornering the market.It's not a secret but Mayor moonbeam is at least 5 years late and cares more about bike lanes than curbing illegal foreign investment. Canada should immediately implement Australian-style foreign ownership laws.

But intersting if it works. Everyone gets the tax added to their property tax but then it is rebated with filing an Income Tax return thus proving residency. Don't file an income tax return? Better figure out in a hurry or else you get to pay the new tax

In 1973 Pierre Elliot Trudeau establish the Foreign Investment Review Agency which clearly recognized that too much foreign ownership of Canada was a problem. It was later gutted by Lyin' Brian. Yet here we are 43 years later and Justin Trudeau has no problem with a huge portion of Canada's 3rd largest city residential *and* commercial being bought up by people/businesses of a single foreign country - China. Why is Trudeau and the LPC letting this happen?

There is a nice summary of how FIRA came to be in Wikipedia. This was a concern even in the ultra-conservative 50's so controlling foreign ownership is hardly a "lefty" issue.
