The Home Office has hiked fees sharply for UK nationals to renouncetheir British nationality, following a Brexit surge in people adopting thecitizenship of other European countries.

Ministers were accused of “cashing in on Brexit” and giving Britonsliving on the continent a “last kick out the door” after it emerged fees werequietly raised to more than ￡1,000 for a family of three.

The department says thesharp increase reflects an increased cost of handling applications – at thesame time as British people applying for foreign passports surged.

Figures from EU statistics agency Eurostat showthe number of British people seeking the citizenship of other countries hadincreased by 165 per cent in the year of the referendum compared with theprevious year. Individual figures from other countries show a sustainedincrease in similar applications throughout 2017.

Though the Dutchgovernment is changing the law to allow Dutch citizens living in Britain toadopt dual citizenship – to cushion them from the referendum result – no suchexemption has been made for British citizens living in the Netherlands.

Campaigners said the move to hike the fees had added to the “painful” decision manyBritish people had taken to renounce their nationality, which most only didbecause they feel they have no other option to secure their future.

You can just be a DUALCITIZEN and not bother to renew your UK passport for one of those daft bluethings - ie SAVE MONEY.
Most of us appear tohave Irish ancestry (which can be any parent or grand-parent born in Ulster orEire).
It only costs about ￡200to get JOINT Irish citizenship and this KEEP our EU rights of free movement etcetc etc.

Someone I know thought about giving up his Britishcitizenship. He was pretty much 50/50 over whether or not to do that, but endedup deciding on a whim to cancel it. He said it was because of something he readin the newspaper about how he was suffering under the unelected dictators ofthe UK.
Well anyway he rushed out and told them he was quitting,then instead of figuring out which country he was going to join, he just fartedaround for over a year. Apparently the government told him they'll have thepaperwork processed by March of next year, so he really should startconcentrating on selecting a country. Having said that, he's obviously veryconflicted about the entire process and thinks if he asked himself again, he'ddefinitely elect to stay.
Meanwhile he still haven't got a plan of what to do orwhere he's going to live. He thought getting a new job would be the easiest thingin the world - he told me he'd looked into this in excruciating detail, butI've yet to see his notes. We had a bit of a row last Summer, but it wasnothing really, only lasted for about five minutes then we went out drinking.
I asked him yesterday and he says he's still not surewhat he's going to do. He said he doesn't have a plan (hard to believe I know,but there you are)

I don′t agree that renouncing nationality is a lastresort.  I have never wanted, nor gained anything from, Britishnationality.  The only time I qualified to change, I couldn′t affordit.  This didn′t seem as important then because we were all in the EU andhad freedom of movement.  
Now a British passport is like a document stating that you are an idiot. I would rather be stateless, if nowhere else wants me, than be identified withsuch a stupid and embarrassing country, which I left over 40 years ago andnever missed.
