Chinese tourists are shunning the sunny beaches of Australia for the frozen mountains of Russia and Switzerland because its facilities are not up to scratch.

Australia was only the 17th most popular destination for China's growing number of holidaymakers booking package holidays between April and June this year.

It ranked just below Switzerland at 16th and behind Russia at 13th and France at 10th with Asian neighbours making up the top nine led by Thailand and South Korea according to figures from the China National Tourism Administration.

China is Australia's biggest source of tourists who spent $7 billion a year with Tourism Australia projecting $13 billion by 2020.

But that increase would mostly be driven by more Chinese people traveling as only five per cent of its 1.35 billion population own a passport - with market share falling.

Wow One of those French I am actually shocked! We were in France recently (well Paris specifically) and left early because it was so scary and intimidating. We were constantly harassed by beggars when we were walking down the street treated rudely by staff in cafes etc. I am sure the average person in France is lovely but there are lovely people everywhere including Australia. At least you can walk down the street here without being scammed.

Lived in Hong Kong for a year. Nearly went postal trying to get off the trains there lining up at shop counters and so on. As an Aussie I never noticed common courtesy until there was NONE.

Most of those rooms on Hasting Streeg are not old and run down. There are a couple of older accommodation places but yoh can usually tell from the picture when you book. Love to know the place of the beachfront accommodation you stayed at as beachfront is being renovated every few years.
