Canada said on Monday it would let 300000 immigrants into the country in 2017 maintaining this year’s target despite recommendations to increase it to help spur economic growth.

While the target is unchanged from 2016’s plan it is above the average of 259542 immigrants admitted from 2011 to 2015.

Immigration minister John McCallum told reporters that making the 300000 target permanent laid the foundation for future immigration growth.

Here in Canada there are of course people who don't like different people.. who want Canada to be all white or at least to not get less white... Who don't like different cultures and customs. No country is free of such people.
You can read them below as they try to convince you Canada is a racist over populated country on the edge of economic collapse because of the huge burden of immigrants and refugees.
Anyone who takes a few minutes to look up facts from obxtive sources (avoid the Fraser Institute for example) will realise that like all countries we have problems and we have successes.
So to provide a counter balance I present an article published in the New York Times a few months ago... written by Americans who came to Canada to see how we're dealing with some of the Syrian refugees...

These people are not just randomly coming in boats like to Europe or walking across the border as in the US they are checked vetted and people with needed skills are given preference.

Incredibly naive short-sighted policy. Approximately 125000 will either be in the family class or refugees; namely those who will largely be a burden on the system. This at a time when Canada is experiencing an affordable housing crisis where almost a million people depend on food banks montly while the average detached home in two of its three largest cities is now over a million dollars.
For some context readers in the UK and Europe should realise that Canada's foreign born population by percentage is larger than that of the UK Germany France and every other major EU nation. Toronto and Vancouver have a higher foreign born population by percentage than London.

Immigration is a win win situation for countries like Canada. They create jobs and fill niches that other Canadians cannot. They overwhelming want to work and are generally more excited to be Canadian than most Canadians. They also have large families and those children become very productive Canadians in the future.

As an American who lives in Vancouver that's a very ignorant comment. Canada isn't paradise but there would be no rational reason for somebody who gets permanent residency in Canada to try to live undocumented in the US. In most places Canada has better schools/transport/services and is safer. For those at the top of the economic ladder you can find the same jobs you would in the US while for those at the bottom it's better thanks to a higher minimum wage and the aforementioned services. At all levels they would be worse off in the US without papers.

7.5 billion people on the planet (and rapidly growing in Africa and Asia) maybe 800 million are caucasians (generally declining). The law of large numbers and people movement means the world is going to be a melting pot whether you like it or not. Unless that is you are like Japan that wants to preserve racial (sic) purity and thinks they can replace falling numbers with robots.

The movement of people is largely in one direction. Most nations of the world are not becoming melting pots- exactly the opposite. It is only in the West that large scale mixing of many cultures is occurring. Who knows how it will work out? It has never occurred before.

Actually one thing that makes Canada relatively unique is that we expressly try NOT to be a 'melting pot' - we prefer to be a 'tossed salad'. We celebrate the differences not try to wipe them out.
Not everyone here likes that. But so far they're the minority.
