BRITAIN’S defences are being put at risk at a time of rising global tension by the Royal Navy’s “woefully low” number of warships, MPs warn today.

And delays over building a new generation of frigates could shrink the current total of 13 even further, says the Defence Select Committee.

Speaking before the release of the National Shipbuilding Strategy, Tory committee chairman, Julian Lewis, said: “The fleet is way below the critical mass required for the many tasks that could confront it if the international scene continues to deteriorate.”

For anyone with previous service in the RN this looks like total ineptitude on behalf of the government.  Leaving the country without a single aircraft carrier and only about 20 operational frigates/destroyers is playing fast and loose with our security as an island nation with interests abroad.  Defence is like insurance - when you don't have enough you will pay a big price if a serious crisis emerges.  We seem to be specialising in pea shooters and fitting engines that break down in warm water we need to get our priorities right and transfer overseas aid to the defence budget as many people are suggesting below.

Precisely how big must or navy be to defend our small island? Do we have to match Russian or Chinese Navy? Of course we cannot do it alone, which is why our support of NATO is so important. In the unlikely event that the UK is targeted and there is no support from elsewhere, that is when Trident will be the ultimate deterrent. We have made some foolish decisions in the past, like getting rid of our carriers and Harriers, before the was a replacement and the Mod seem to be incapable of specifying equipment without delays, budget overruns and faulty equipment.
