Next year, Beijing will ban highly polluting old cars from being driven whenever air-quality alerts are issued in the city or neighbouring regions, according to its environmental protection bureau.

明年，一旦北京或者临近地区发布空气质量预警，北京将禁止高污染的老旧汽车上路，北京环保局称。

China has adopted various measures over the years to reduce the smog shrouding many of the country’s northern cities in winter, causing hazardous traffic conditions and disrupting daily life.

多年来中国采取了一系列措施来减轻雾霾影响。一到冬季，中国北方的很多城市就会受到雾霾困扰，对交通安全和日常生活造成了影响。

Pointless when we know newer cars pollute just as much, if not more, based on real world driving measurements.

The other issue, besides sheer number of cars, is that petrol and diesel are poorly refined in China, which means the cars have no cat converters and the trucks no diesel particulate trap filters since they would clogged and useless in months.

Beijing is a city with way too many people and cars. Restricting the old cars isn't nearly enough. Maybe they should bring back the bicycles like the 70's and early 80's.

北京人口和汽车都太多了。限制旧车并不能解决问题。或许他们应该像七八十年代那样多多骑自行车。

Fix your own house first. There are far more bicycles and electric scooters in Beijing than you will ever see in London.

Beijing has 3x population and 1/4 GDP per capita compared to London so duh yes more bicycles...

Beijing is twice the size of London. London has 12 million. Beijing 22.
No one puts the 12 million migrants in Beijing, they come of their own accord to make a buck. You'd send them back to the fields and poverty Mao style?

Only if too many of them drive everywhere. If almost all those 12 million are on foot, bikes and electric trams/buses/trains/tubes then the environment will still be busy but it won't be awful.

如果这些人去哪里都自己开车的话，那环境肯定差。如果这1200万都靠走路自行车电车巴士火车地铁出行的话，那环境就不会那么可怕了。

I recall seeing news pictures from Beijing in the Mao era and China's capital city was full of cyclists, I would think then how civilised. Now Beijing is hell with millions of cars, all Chinese aspired to own a car. They are as stupid as westerners, are they not?

我记得看过毛时期的北京照片，当时的首都北京都是骑自行车的，我会觉得这多文明啊。现在北京到处都是车，所有的中国人都想拥有车。他们和西方人一样蠢，不是吗？
