The Government has moved to raise tuition fees by £250 without any announcement from the Department for Education (DfE).

Regulations to allow the changes, which will see fees go up to £9,250, were published earlier this week to the National Archives legislation store.

The new legislation to the changes was not announced on the DfE website or in a statement to Parliament by ministers.

The changes, which are set to affect 500,000 students, went unnoticed for days until they were reported by the BBC on Thursday evening.

Opposition politicians criticised the nature of the announcement. Shadow universities minister Gordon Marsden accused the Government of trying to “sneak out” the plans while Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron described the approach as “shabby”.

He said the move was a classic case of the Government “avoiding scrutiny” for its policies.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Department for Education said the measure had been trailed in the summer and that no further announcement was needed.

“Importantly, universities will not be able to increase their fees unless they have passed rigorous quality standards,” the spokesperson said.

“We are determined to make sure that everyone with the potential to benefit from higher education has the opportunity to do so.”

Most universities are expected to be able to charge the new higher fees, however.

Tuition fees have been set at £9,000 since 2012 but the Government has said it wants to raise them further because of inflation.

The last time fees were raised students across the country took to the streets to protest and blockade and occupy campuses.

£250?...Well, that's only a few joints, smokes and shots that they will have to fore go. Where's the problem

Agitated
No: For most its £750 (plus interest) of debt.

AngryOfE7
what about the compound interest on this when its part of the Student Loan? the £250 becomes a lot more than that over the 20+ years it takes to repay and a loan counts against your ability to get a mortgage under the affordability test.

Raise in school fees to fund Brexit.

Jabbathehut
We were the 5th richest economy before Brexit now we're sliding down. India has overtaken us. Not good.
Investing in a good quality workforce is essential but the government would rather spend billions on Trident, HS2, Hinckley Point etc

I for one would be willing to pay a higher rate of taxes if it meant tuition fees were free and I would go one step further to say, additionally subsidised. It has worked brilliantly in many Scandinavian countries and the people are happy with it. We should be encouraging young people to go to university. We don't want them in debt up to their head before their adult lives have started.

So you would be happy to pay an extra 5% in tax

FluxDensity
I would. Having educated population serves everybody.

Both my sons decided against university. Best thing they did. The youngest did an apprenticeship and the other helped run then  later owned a very demanding small business. They both live and work in Australia now because of their skills and work experience . If they had gone to uni I think they would not be in the position that they are in today.  They are successful due to hard work and being skilled. At 26 my youngest had 10 years work experience and training behind him and emigrated to Australia at 22. He was in great demand.
Most of his  uni friends at  that age were struggling to find work. The other one is running a similar  business in Sydney with a wonderful lifestyle to boot. Miss them both but happy for them.

The point is that they decided! Soon the poor and middle classes will have no choice because they can't afford it!

Sadly some of the comments on here reflect our lack of further education. The only way that advanced economies can grow and compete in the world is by increasing the intellect of the nation in general which doesn't mean you only provide vocation courses. The government knows this but still tries to make it elitist by increasing fees due to their dogma. It is easier for them to con the ill-educated.
