From egg-shaped concert halls to skyscrapers reminiscent of big pairs of pants China’s top cities are famously full of curious monuments to architectural ambition. But as land prices in the main metropolises have shot into the stratosphere developers have been scrambling to buy up plots in the country’s second and third-tier cities spawning a new generation of delirious plans in the provinces. President Xi Jinping may have issued a directive last year outlawing “oversized xenocentric weird” buildings but many of these schemes were already well under way; his diktat has proved to be no obstacle to mayoral hubris yet.

From Harbin “City of Music” to Dezhou “Solar Valley” provincial capitals are branding themselves as themed enclaves of culture and industry to attract inward investment and commissioning scores of bold buildings to match. Even where there is no demand city bureaucrats are relentlessly selling off land for development hawking plots as the primary form of income – accounting for 80% of municipal revenues in some cases. In the last two months alone 50 Chinese cities received a total of 453bn yuan (£54bn) from land auctions  a 73% increase on last year and it’s the provincial capitals that are leading the way.

The irony is that no architects are trying to duplicate Chinese architecture anywhere else on the planet. Are the Chinese so ashamed of their own culture that they have ditched it in favour of Internationalism. Recreating Oxford and Brugges in a Chinese city is one thing but I cannot imagine Brugges or Oxford recreating China any day soon.

Travelling to many of these cities a very large amount of these new building projects either stand empty or will be so for many years to come. It is a total waste of resources and the architects that have contributed should ask themselves the questions:
1. Where did the architecture fees come from?
2. Should you be ashamed as an architect to have contributed to the "empty China dream" a headache for every Chinese citiy the tightly controlled pricing cartels that keep these building out of reach for 95% of the Chinese people and lead to a huge property bubble of seismic proportions.
Concluding the greed of these architects and developers will become the downfall of maybe a whole country in the near future. I remember Zaha Hadid designed a building in one of the most beautiful parts of the ancient city of Beijing destroying a huge part of the so called "Hutongs" in the east of the old city. Its a joke that she won prices for that and foreign architects' greed and sheer knowledge gap of how things really are in China is plain bad and might hunt them if they have any consciousness. Good piece but not much substance.

What's funny is that this 'culture' has nothing to do with China and it's people.
Which Chinese culture? There are 164 distinct ethnic identities in China and every one preserves it culture in its own way and all are alive and well if you care to look for them.
The glittering high tec cityscapes are stunning and real and do in fact reflect Chinese culture in many subtle ways. But you have to have an open mind to see it.

Its because China for all its shortcomings is still racing ahead in every aspect and at last the money is following gravity and flowing downward. The deprived areas of every province shrinking in spite of erratic planning. Tibet at peace with itself and China and prospering.
We've been hearing about the imminent collapse of its economy for decades the same fearmongering that drove the British EU referendum to leave the EU.
It never happened and never will.
All the punters who predicted disaster have gently silenced themselves and China coasts along to become the worlds largest economy in the next few decades.
And it still doesn't have a single military base outside its own territory and is at war with no one.
Truly exceptional by any metrics.

That's just bollox. I've lived in China for 7 years 3 different cities & never met anyone who went to Chinese opera.... The Hobbit is right (never thought I'd write that in my life!) The orchestra and performers may be Chinese - but the works they're performing are usually/always Western....

I am judging from my North American experience where the opera is attended primarily by music students and people wearing tuxedos or formal gowns. I once dated one of the former and when she invited me to an evening out I bought a second-hand swallowtail tux for the occasion. At Intermission everyone assumed I was with the orchestra - when asked I told them that since I was a flugelhorn player I wasn't needed for that night's performance.

Telecoms giant Huawei has courted lawsuits for copying from rivals in the past but its love of imitating clearly extends to architecture too. I fear that Mr Wainwright despite being an acknowledge expert in IT-related matters hasn't been keeping up with Huawei's development but on the other hand it is after all a Chinese firm and thus a snarky von oben attitude from a Guardian columnist is entirely justified and par for the course.... Henri

Why the negative narrative? Those are interesting buildings and they could look really good with appropriate green landscaping. One can't reasonably expect appreciation of anything done in China - not even in the - ramAustralia ; this is after all the Guardian which has its own narrative.
