China and California have signed an agreement to work together on reducing emissions as the state’s governor warned that “disaster still looms” without urgent action on climate change.

The governor of California Jerry Brown spoke to reporters at an international clean energy conference in Beijing about Donald Trump’s decision to pull the US out of the Paris agreement saying it would ultimately prove to be only a temporary setback.

For now he said China European countries and individual US states would fill the gap left by the federal government’s decision to abdicate leadership on the issue.

This is the way forward in Australia too. The Weatherill government in South Australia recognising that Turnbull and Frydenberg are duds have taken action to protect their state's power supplies. We need more of the same. The country as a whole needs a government that doesn't start every policy idea with the overriding concern of "What will our donors think?"

This is good news. When California sets an emissions standard on all new vehicles in that state it is often no different to setting the standard nationwide.

I'm not sure you get the fact of that being a win win situation.
Firstly at not time did Trump say they would not try to make those targets.
But if everybody does their bit and not have to pay truckloads of cash for a pointless accord then great.
Does anyone have any common sense at all or is every view based on political hatred?

It gets boring to keep criticising Trump for being an idiot. This is the best way of dealing with him ignore him. Well done to both parties in isolating Trump and lets hope others are able to do the same in other areas of policy. I hope he gets the roughest possible ride when he visits the UK.

We in California are so fortunate to have Jerry Brown as our governor once again No he's not perfect but I'd not exchange him for any other governor of any state in the rest of the unx right now. (Okay - Inslee is pretty awesome too!) Those who wish to mock California - mock away. Now that we've ditched the Republicans who continually mired us in huge debts with massive loans we are doing better and better. CA has had a massive turnaround under Brown. True an earthquake could undo it all but for the politics? We are lucky to have the best around!

California from an outside observer seems over regulated and over rated. If I had to move to the US I'd much rather move to a place like New Hampshire which has better standards of living and a far better political process and greater acceptance of freedom. Now San Francisco is very nice and would almost endear me to CA if it wasn't for LA being a nightmare.

California has 30x more people than New Hampshire. Given the massive size and variety of the state it does quite well. Sure - if you want a mostly homogenous ethnic enclave like New Hampshire (93% "white") and don't want to have to really worry about the diversity of a multi-cultural region with a vastly varied set of landscapes and geographies (urban & rural desert to forest) it makes sense to have a simple homogenous laissez-faire government. That's simply not possible here in California nor would it be welcome.
Our taco trucks can kick New Hampshire's taco trucks's asses ANY day!!!

California is ranked as the 6th largest economy in the world. Stay at least as north as San Francisco and it is a wonderful place.
New Hampshire is the "most free" state in the unx. Which is great if you are a libertarian in your outlook. But I like public works projects.

You can lead follow or get out of the way. Trump has made it clear he will not lead or follow so the world will move ahead without him and he can sit on the sideline and tweet his ignorance.
