A record-breaking experiment by a Chinese satellite has taken the weird world of quantum physics to new heights and is likely to spur other nations including Canada in their efforts to develop an unhackable form of long-distance communication

“We have done something that was absolutely impossible using conventional approaches” said Jian-Wei Pan project leader and physicist at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei. Dr. Pan suggested his team’s achievement had “kick-started a new quantum space race.”

The tour de force experiment featured a device on the satellite beaming pairs of photons – individual particles of light – lixed by a mysterious effect known as quantum entanglement to two separate receiving stations on Earth. The stations were located 1203 kilometres apart a tenfold increase in distance over ground-based tests. Because such quantum signals are effectively impervious to eavesdropping the results have implications for efforts to create more secure communication networks.

No "not canada" but we are in the game and if nothing else this is an illustration of why we need open borders and international co-operation if we are to stay in the game. By we I mean the West and I mean particularly the United States of America. Their protectionism means going backward on every front.

@Tormaine Needham originally planned to write a book cataloguing Chinese inventions but his first volume barely scratched the surface of his subject. He slowly gatherred many of his students into this enterprise and they eventually wrote a collection of 26 books to catalog the history of Chinese discovery.
Myth and Misrepresentation
It leaves one speechless to learn the vast extent of things invented by the Chinese many hundreds of years and often several millennia before they appeared in the West.

That is a statement that bears no merit. Do you not think that other countries including the US and Canada are not doing any industrial espionage.
Science BTW tends to be shared. Not everything can be tagged and priced to meet the pursuit of happiness model.

Fascinating work and a job well done to China. Their picking up of the baton in science technology and space exploration will advance humanity even further. I cant say if this is a small step or a giant leap but their space programs will be very interesting to watch in future.

Research isn't protected in the sense that technology is. I guess following your argument all research would be a total waste including curing life threatening disease and fighting global warming since anyone in the world is free to make use of research results. You might have to shell out a few bucks for the journals and research papers but that is all. Well other than the 10-20 years getting the post-graduate education so that you can understand what you are reading. Note that the Chinese also share their research results with us.

研究不像技术那样受(专利)保护,按你的理论,所有的研究都是浪费,包括应对生活的各种威胁——疾病、全球变暖等,因为所有人都可以免费使用研究成果——当然啦,学术期刊和研究报告可能要花上点儿钱去买,不过想读懂这些,你还需要接受10~20年的教育。记住,中国人同样在向我们分享研究成果。

Well considering how behind Canada is... they ain't selling them nothing.
Heck the Chinese are going to give away this new research anyways like they always have in Quantum physics.
We can't even build a gawd dang train....while China has the largest high speed rail network in the world. Canada has very little to offer them when it comes to intelligence.
Only reason Canada even comes close to China's test scores is cause of Chinese immigrants. Canadians particularly white people in this country consistently score below average. That Vancouver based satellite company likely employs Chinese temporary foreign workers to do all the research and development. But wait... we can stick a pipe into the ground and pump out the black stuff. That's our only value added. The irony is it ain't the ivory tower pumping that oil out. Its trashy red necks doing all the heavy lifting.

It may not be possible to hack quantum communication but there's a catch as anyone try to hack the massage it will automatically destroy it that's means anyone with basic skill of hacking can just try NOT to steal the massage but destroy it by constant hacking the communication to disable the whole system. So I don't think it's a great deal after all.

Did you read the article? The point is not to send the "message" itself but to swap encryption keys between 2 points. If the system is compromised just resend the keys until success. Modern cryptography is basically unbreakable (given time constraints) and should depend solely on the encryption keys.

你读文章没?关键点不是传送“信息”本身,而是在两地点之间交换密匙。如果系统被窃听了,那么就重发密匙直到成功。现代密码学是不可破解的(在时间限制内),而且仅仅依靠密匙。

If we just convicted hackers and made them actually serve time instead of a slap on the wrist then we wouldn't have to spend trillions trying to create unhackable systems.
