'It's as British as fish and chips' - that's what we might say if something is truly representative of the United Kingdom.
But the well-worn saying is in fact inaccurate - as fish and chips aren't British at all.
The dish is one of a handful of quintessentially British foods and drinks that actually hail from foreign lands.
From ketchup to the British brands that now have overseas owners these are the very surprising items that don't hail from the Isles.
FISH AND CHIPS
Fish and chips is actually an immigrant dish.
Fish and chips was brought to British shores in the 17th century when Jewish settlers brought the recipe over from Portugal and Spain the research by Wren Kitchens has found.
Wren Kitchens
They battered fish on the streets from huge trays which they hung round their necks.
But there's a famous feud as to who opened the first official fish and chip shop.
Many credit a Jewish immigrant called Joseph Malin as the man who started the national craze for the dish in east London in 1860.
But others claim a northerner named John Lees was the first selling his fish and chips from a wooden hut in Lancashire.

KETCHUP
Ketchup is basically a national sauce in Britain.
However it doesn't hail from the Isles - and neither is it American.
Long before Heinz came along the precursor to ketchup was invented in 17th century China.
But instead of using tomatoes as a base for the sauce it was made from the brine of pickled fish.
The sauce became a staple at tables across Indonesia and Malaysia and it wasn't long before English colonists became hooked too.
Eventually the sauce morphed into the tomato-based ketchup we know and love today.
TEA
茶
Despite the fact the British climate is nowhere near hot enough to grow tea leaves some people believe that the classic cup of tea was invented in the UK even so as it has become a symbol of the country.
But in fact it was the Chinese who invented tea. The myth goes that the Chinese emperor Shennong discovered the drink almost 5000 years ago when some tea leaves blew into a pot of boiling water he was about to drink from.
The concoction quickly became an integral part of Chinese medicine and over the centuries tea was adopted around the world.
Most of the tea drunk in Britain today doesn't actually come from China or India but Mombasa and Kenya.

BEEFEATER GIN
The London Dry Gin was of course first distilled in London in 1876 and still is to this day.
However the company is no longer a British one - despite its name referring to the famous Yeoman Warders of the Tower of London.
Beefeater was bought by Paris-based Pernod Ricard in 2005.
However Beefeater still has no less than nine distilleries in London one of which has a visitor centre dedicated to the tipple.
WALKERS CRISPS
Walkers Crisps was famously founded in Leicester in 1948 and to this day its crisps are made in the city with the factory producing 11 million packets a day.
But after 40 years in business Walkers was bought by the American-based Frito-Lay a division of the multinational PepsiCo.
Borrowing from the iconic Walkers logo Lay's Crisps are sold across the US and Europe and in other global regions they are sold under a variety of different names.

CADBURY'S CHOCOLATE
Cadbury's chocolate was of course one of Britain's proudest exports.
But the world-famous chocolate brand founded in 1824 in Birmingham has not been truly British for many decades now.
It was first acquired by Swiss drinks manufacturer Schweppes in 1969 who dropped the 's' from Cadbury's in 2003 before selling the company in 2007.
American-based Kraft Foods then bought Cadbury for £11.5 billion. The confectionary business of Kraft then became Mondelez International which also owns Toblerone.
Today The Hershey Company manufactures and distributes Cadbury products across the US. However the brand still has roots planted deep in Birmingham.

'Instead of using tomatoes as a base for the sauce it was made from the brine of pickled fish. Eventually the sauce morphed into the tomato-based ketchup we know and love today.' - Ketchup or Catsup as it was originally known was not the sauce we know today. You can thank Heinz for the tomato variety that we now associate the name Ketchup with and they also promoted that name. Therefore its true to say that tomato Ketchup as we know it originated in America. Fifty years ago most Brits didn't use the word Ketchup anyway. It was know as Tomato Sauce.
