After more than two years of fierce politicaldebate over whether glyphosate causes cancer, EU countries on Monday voted torenew the license of the world’s most common herbicide thanks to a dramaticU-turn from Berlin.
Germany ultimately gave the green light aftermonths of abstaining on the issue. Most recently, Berlin’s envoys said thattheir hands were tied because Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives had beenexploring a coalition deal with the fiercely anti-pesticide Greens. Those talksfell apart a week ago, freeing Merkel to approve glyphosate.
The EU vote in a food safety committee attendedby national officials came as a relief to farmers across the Continent, who seethe weedkiller as vital to preserving bumper crop yields. At the height of thedebate, it often looked as if environmental campaigners would win the politicalbattle by arguing that glyphosate was both carcinogenic and harmful to thesoil.
While northern and eastern European countrieslargely voted in favor of a new glyphosate license in Brussels on Monday,France and Italy sought to block it.
Any hopes that the vote would lay the glyphosatedebate to rest were immediately confounded by French President Emmanuel Macronand Italian Agriculture Minister Maurizio Martina, who said Paris and Romewould still ban glyphosate over the next three years.

“I asked the government to make the necessaryarrangements so that the use of glyphosate is prohibited in France as soon asalternatives have been found,” Macron tweeted after the vote.
A ban by France is a bold move from Macron. While he will win support from a solid caucus of green-minded voters, he risksa stinging backlash from French farmers using more than 600 glyphosateproducts. Martina said Rome would also seek to eradicate glyphosatedomestically by 2020.
Bad blood in Berlin

The domestic political fall-out in Germany wasequally startling.
Just as politicians from Merkel’s conservativesare seen to be inching toward talks on renewing a grand coalition with theSocial Democrats, the two factions came to blows over the glyphosate vote.
Moments after the food committee made itsdecision, German Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks from the SocialDemocrats angrily asserted that she had been double-crossed on Berlin’sposition by conservative Agriculture Minister Christian Schmidt.
In an unusually damning statement, she saidSchmidt had confirmed in a text message to her that Germany would abstain.Simultaneously, a different order to vote in favor of renewing the herbicidewas sent to officials in Brussels attending the vote.
“No one who is interested in trust buildingbetween partners can behave like this,” Hendricks said, adding that Germanyshould have abstained due to ongoing disagreements between the environment andagriculture ministries.
Andrea Nahles, leader of the SPD group in theBundestag, called Schmidt’s move “a massive breach of trust” and said: “Ireally wonder whether Merkel has her people under control.”
Martin Häusling, a Green lawmaker from Germanyin the European Parliament, laid the blame for the decision on the fact thathis party was no longer likely to play a part in the next coalition government.
“The decision in favor of the controversialherbicide glyphosate, which is suspected of causing cancer, is inflicted onEurope by the desolate state of the government’s formation in Germany … Thebehavior of the Federal Minister of Agriculture Christian Schmidt lacksforesight and is scandalous.”
Schmidt’s office said that the bill approved onMonday had already factored in provisions on biodiversity which Hendricks hadbacked. His office recalled that Hendricks had said last year that “the federalgovernment can approve a prolongation” of glyphosate as long as the EU“protects biodiversity.”

Schmidt did not specifically refer to thedispute over text messages.
The clash between Hendricks and Schmidt is notthe first sign of left-right tensions that could muddy the waters in Germanpolitics as a grand coalition comes into increasing focus.
Der Spiegel on Monday reported that a fissurebetween the SPD and Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) created problems overthe way the country should vote on who should host the European BankingAuthority after the U.K. leaves the EU. The magazine reported that the SPDminister at the meeting did not support Dublin’s candidacy as the CDU hadwanted.
Monday’s decision sparked an angry reaction fromenvironmental groups, who have argued for years that policymakers should havepaid closer attention to an assessment carried out by the World HealthOrganization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer, which concluded thatglyphosate “probably” causes cancer.
Both the European Food Safety Authority and theEuropean Chemicals Agency, by contrast, determined the chemical was safe.

“Whilenorthern and eastern European countries largely voted in favor of a newglyphosate license in Brussels on Monday, France and Italy sought to block it.”– Yes, because the vote was all about competition from eastern and centralEuropean farmers that Italian and French farmers cannot meet; and cheaper agriproducts for northern European consumers.

Recent German track record as far as environment and healthof citizens is concerned is a disaster:
–dieselgate tolerated for years putting health and lives of millions of EUcitizens at risk
–growing CO2 emissions due to burning of di2ty fos2il fuels: German coal andgrowing volume of natura1 gas from Ru2sia
–today Germany started to log down Hambach Forest – nearly 12,000 years old, rich in biodiversity and home to 142 species regarded as important forconservation – to extract and burn even more lignite coal
–In September German authorities killed a bison – protected specie that camefrom Poland:
‘Aftermore than 250 years a wild bison had been spotted again in Germany and all theauthorities could think to do is shoot it,’ WWF board member Chris Heinrichsaid.
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) says it will be filing chargesagainst officials in Germany who ordered hunters to shoot a wild bison believedto be the first of its kind spotted in the country in over 250 years.
But it does not prevent German authorities from constantlylecturing other countries – even those more successful in this area.

No, no worries Peter, I understand perfectly.
These Europeans always call pot kettle black but they areblinded by the plank in their own eyes. An example being one of Trumpsdaughters being put up as some spokeswoman and they go berserk. They forgetMacrons wife Budget is placed in the same position and they do not see whatthey do so long as they do it. Its weird. I see things as they are and so doyou, but they don’t. I don’t worry about it but I do take the waz out of themfor being so blind (and the more they don’t like it the more I do)..

“Afierce political debate over whether glyphosate is cancerogenic or not” – thissentence is absolutely ubuesque and shows up the absurdity of the wholeproblem. The politics are not scientists and should rely in their decisions inthese matters on experimental science and not on ideology.

I guess it was inevitable. In the German coalitionnegotiations stopping Glyphosate was going to be a carrot that was dangled infront of the Greens to encourage them into a coalition. The Greens scupperedthe coalition talks. Merkel must do what she threatened to do if the Greens didnot cooperate, otherwise she would not be taken seriously by any other party infuture coalition talks.
By choosing to scupper the talks the Greens must take someresponsibility for this decision. Clearly it was not the top on their list ofpriorities.

The German position doesn’t poison anything. Just normalhick-ups at EU level as usual. 5 years to find an alternative to the product:farmers are thankful. Glyphosate is but a minor poisoning factor compared tocar and industrial pollution. Just take the time to wash your vegetables andfruit before swallowing them. How do you think one can eradicate pests Blowingat them in the wind? Come one: wake up. The world population is expending andneeds to be fed.
