anadians have a very negative impression of the Chinese government and are narrowly opposed to a free-trade deal with that country, a new poll suggests.

By a narrow margin, poll respondents also did not like the idea of a China-Canada free-trade deal. Forty-seven per cent said they opposed or somewhat opposed talks, and 41 per cent said they supported or somewhat supported it.

No civilized country can compete with a country whose labour and environmental laws are somewhere between non-existent and a joke.
We should be adding a tariff to all their goods to account for the money manufacturers don't have to spend on treating their employees like human beings and the money they don't have to spend on environmental protection because they air and water are treated like sewers.
And while we are at it stop actively subsidizing Chinese mail order business to the detriment of Canadian retailers.
Let's have a level playing field.

Free trade with China means our main export will be jobs. It would be stupid to have free trade with China.

The TPP should be rejected for the very same reasons; competing with Mexican and Indonesian labour, will cost us jobs, and further reduce income inequality.

For what it's worth, I think some of the animus comes as a result of the poor quality of Chinese goods. And, most of the time, we don't have any choice. We're forced to choke down a lot of crap and few are that happy about it.

Here is the problem... we have a giant and long-standing trade deficit with China, more than 30 billion dollars per year.
We buy much more from them than they do from us.
We are the customer, so we have all the leverage. So why on God's green earth were the Conservatives gullible enough to make concessions that limit Canadian sovereignty just to get this trade deal?
We should have been able to negotiate a very favorable deal and if China didn't want to sharpen their pencil there are many other countries we could buy similar products from.
Another example of the utter financial incompetence of the Conservative government.
