中国将前往美国展开新谈话 [联合国媒体]

China’s topeconomic negotiator is expected to visit the United States soon for talks withhis American counterparts aimed at calming trade tensions between the two sidesand paving the way for a meeting between the two countries’ presidents.

中国最高经济谈判代表预计不久将访问美国，与美国同行举行会谈，旨在缓和双方的贸易紧张局势，并为两国总统会晤铺平道路。

In total three sources, fromboth sides, confirmed the development to the SouthChina Morning Post, but said the schedule for Vice-Premier Liu He’s trip hadstill not been decided.

He said a consensus had beenreached between the two countries during Liu’s trip to the US in May, but thenTrump decided to slap more tariffs on China, triggering tit-for-tat retaliation.

The tensions between Chinaand the US have spilled over into security aspects over the past weeks, withboth Trump and Vice-President Mike Pence accusing China of meddling in USdomestic politics.

Assistant commerce ministerLi Chenggang said on Tuesday that both sides were in close contact to follow upon the phone conversation between Xi and Trump.

In Beijing on Saturday, Liutold former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger that China and the US shouldseek to resolve their economic disputes on the principles of “mutual respect,equality and mutual benefit”.

Chinablames the tariffs on the broader US strategy to contain it, while the US hasaccused China of using unfair trade practices for its benefit.

Shi Yinhong, professor of international relations withBeijing’s Renmin University, said the best guess was that there would be nofurther tariffs from China and the US on each other's products.

“But the other half of thetrade war, which is the US technology blockade, will not be suspended, no matterwho is the US leader,” he said.

In a speech on Monday, Shisaid the Chinese government should expand market access, increase imports fromthe US, and reduce hefty state subsidies and control of economic activities tostrive for a “relatively long period or regional” truce in the trade war.

Shi said China’s toppriority now was to curtail the risks of the trade war on its economy andfinancial system to ensure stability.

Chen Long, an economist withGavekal Dragonomics, said China may ask the US to impose no further tariffswhen both countries resume talks, but it could take a pragmatic approach .

“The best outcome is to stoptariffs rising from the current level. But it is difficult to reverse theprevious tariffs.” he said.

“But the US won’t stop itstechnological blockade on China while there is not much for Beijing can do tooverhaul policies on industry and state-owned enterprises to meet demands ofWashington.”

You’re making this storyaren’t you? Anyone reading your fictional story knows that it is not the tradewar that causes your wife employer to gradually loose their profits. It’s abusiness model which fails to adopt to the ever changing market. The intentionof the trade war is to jack up the production costs of the Chinesemanufacturing machine and make it more expensive, not the other way around.
