China has issued a new travel alx warning its citizens about the risks of visiting Sweden, the second such statement in three months, as it continues its diplomatic dispute with Stockholm.
The two sides have been at loggerheads over human rights, but the initial flashpoint was an incident in early September when a group of Chinese tourists claimed they had been mistreated by the Swedish police – an incident that generated fierce nationalist backlash.
The latest travel advisory published on Saturday by the Chinese embassy in Stockholm and Foreign Ministry said there had been over 40 incidents – including thefts and robbery – involving Chinese tourists over the past three months.
It also said that it had not been given any information by the Swedish police about how the investigations were progressing.
The Swedish government has yet to respond to a request for comment. The first travel warning was issued on September 23 and expired on December 22, but it has been renewed and extended until March 22 because of “the security situation in Sweden”.
Relations between the two sides deteriorated after a group of Chinese tourists were removed from a Swedish hotel by police on September 2. They had arrived at night, a day before their reservation began, and refused to leave the lobby when asked to do so.、

While Swedish government defended the television programme as an act of freedom of expression, the incident ignited an online furore in China, prompting calls among social media users for boycotts of Swedish brands, such as Ikea and H&M, and Sweden itself.

Relations between the two countries had already been frayed by a visit to Sweden by the Dalai Lama and Beijing’s continuing detention of the Hong Kong bookseller Gui Minhai, a Chinese-born Swedish citizen. Bjorn Jerden, head of the Asia Programme at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs, said the Chinese embassy appeared to have returned to its old ways after lying low for a few weeks.
He said it was “hard to say exactly what’s going on behind the scenes”, but noted that the embassy had issued a slew of angry interviews and attacks on critical press reports in September and October, before apparently changing tactics and falling silent.

To be fair, Chinese are not generally maltreated overseas, at least in terms of booking a hotel. They have a lot of options. They can book into pretty much any hotel or hostel in western countries. There is no rule that says "no foreign guests" allowed. On the other hand, overseas tourists visiting mainland China will find quite a few hostels or hotels have a "no foreigners" rule. It's far less common in first tier cities, but if people want to explore China's provinces, especially if they want to do so while staying in budget hotels / hostels, they need to call the hotel in advance to check if they accept "foreigners". Many non Chinese tourists have been turned away from hotels on the mainland due to this rule, which is apparently something to do with the hotel not having the adequate insurance to protect overseas guests against a major incident such as a fire ... So at least Chinese people have a good deal of flexibility in terms of finding hotels when they travel abroad. It's not all doom and gloom.

Based the feedback from a reader on another comment on SCMP, this Chinese family were not honest. The son had earlier tried to book 4 into a room but was told the room could take maximum of 3. On that night, the hostel staff had originally agreed to let them wait in the lounge or pay for 1 additional night. But the son went out, saying to look for alternative. Then the son came back with Chinese woman (actually his wife) claiming she was another tourist also looking for room. The hostel felt suspicious, withdrawn their offer and ask them to leave. The Chinese refused to leave, shouted and cried loudly, leading to hostel staff calling police to remove them. Sweden is neutral in various international dispute. Sweden has nothing to gain by antagonizing China. On the other hand, many PRC tourists are well known to cause troubles both inside and outside their own country.

Since you said it was a cheapskate hostel, then why expect 5-star treatment? Is this what most Chinese do - pay little and expect royal treatment? And you've said it yourself, if a billionaire from China were to visit 5-star hotel anywhere in the world, his early arrival would have been somehow accepted. That's true everywhere! But those who arrived early ought to know they've no rights to demand any hotel, however rich they may be, to accommodate them! This is no different from insisting to stay on after the chrck-out time and refusing to pay. Money aside, how do you know the hostel might not have been full or fully booked? This is even more so if it's, in your words, "cheap" or "cheapskate"! Don't be a cheapskate by going to a 5-star hotel then!

If any western tourists turned up to the same Swedish hotel 12 hours too early, they would've been kicked out too ... And the police called if necessary ... Respectable tourists don't try to blag a night on the sofa in the hotel lobby. Sorry to say, but if they arrived too early then that's their mistake, not the hotel's ... It's not about ethnicity, it's about common sense ... It doesn't matter where you're from, if you arrive way too early to check in, any hotel will ask you to leave. They are a business, not a homeless hostel.

Common sense and human decency would have the hotel allow the tourists to rest at the hotel at that hour. After all they were booked for a stay a couple of hours aways. There is no doubt that the element of sinophobic racist thinking on the part of the hotel staff led to the debacle. With how things are between the two, hopefully Chinese tourists will also exercise commonsense on where not to visit for the time being.
