As they begin to harvest what may be one of the largest canola crops on record, many farmers are growing increasingly concerned over the prospect of a drastically smaller export market as China stands firm on its plan to stall Canadian exports of the seed.

China – Canada’s largest canola-seed customer, importing an average of four million tonnes per year – is preparing to implement a new standard on Sept. 1 that will require the amount of extraneous plant material, known as dockage, in canola seed exports to make up less than 1 per cent of each shipment.

A majority of the sales to China have already stopped ahead of the deadline, said Canola Council of Canada president Patti Miller, leaving many in the industry bracing for a significant hole in the market and potentially lower prices as harvest begins. The new standard would require an increased level of cleaning that Ms. Miller says would be time-consuming and more costly.

I'm having a beer with my buddies and laughing at the two-faced bs, lies and excuses being posted by the regular g&m anti-China trolls. Oh the horror of the Chinese demanding high standards for canola shipments. How dare they demand quality goods when a couple of their companies were charged with selling tainted milk and dog food in the past - this is their logic.
Similarly, Nathan, the regular anti-China reporter is once again censoring his latest article where Tourism Canada wants Chinese TV to censor references to the First Nations and Quebec separation (the laughable irony). And here the same trolls are whining because China dares to air Canada's dirty laundry. These m_or_onz post as if they are the only ones who have the right to criticize China's "human rights' violations.

Are the Chinese producers of canola going to meet this same standard???? Isn't this just a form or protectionism designed to throw road block at foreign producers to give Chinese domestic producers an advantage and grow their market share? Just a guess.

If they want super cleaned canola, charge them for the service. Have one price for regular quality and a higher price for the low dockage quality. 
We could also pass a labelling law that would require all Canadian manufacturers or importers of foodstuffs and pharmaceuticals to indicate if they contain any product of Chinese origin.

China has standards? Now that I know our Canola is exported to China for processing, I shall research different brands and probably no longer purchase this oil. I no longer purchase Kellogg's breakfast cereals for this reason. Grocery shopping takes me a long time as the labels must be checked carefully. Obfuscation is the name of the game. Watch out for "prepared for", "imported by" etc. Labels should state the country of origin and the country where processed. I don't buy Highliner fish anymore as most of it is processed in China. Yuch!

China. "Our scientists say there is a scientific basis to change." 
Trudeau - Reply option 1: "You are wrong and we will take China to the WTO to settle this." 
Trudeau - Reply option 2: "Okay, we will send it for further study." 
Reply option 1 is the correct response - we shall soon see what happens.

This is not a problem. Want a higher grade of product, you pay a higher price. This is no different than the steel industry, oil industry, or anything else. In fact Canada should welcome the opportunity to charge a higher price for its product.

The customer is king, is always right, as any marketing guru would say. China has as much right to reject our dirty canola seeds as Canada to reject American F35's which still don't work. 
Either you make your customers happy, or you don't make a sale. Simple as that.
