A new ranking has named Norwaythe most prosperous country in the world for the quality of its healthcaresystem, civil liberties and social fabric, while Canada has come out on top as beingthe most tolerant.

最近一项新的排名活动将挪威列为世界上最繁荣的国家，依据是该国高质量的医疗体系、公民自由和社会结构,而加拿大最后被评为是最宽容的。

After measuring 142 countries across eight categories, the 2015 ProsperityIndex put Norway at the topof the heap, followed by Switzerlandand Denmark.In fact, Nordic and Scandinavian countries dominate the top 10 list, taking uphalf the spots.

For the index, analysts at the London-based think tank and charity, the LegatumInstitute, ranked countries based on their economy, entrepreneurship andopportunity, governance, education, health, safety and security, personalfreedom and social capital.

A scan of the top-10 list shows that the most prosperous countries -- measuredby income and quality of life -- are found largely in the West, with theconspicuous absence of countries from Asia, Latin America, the Middle East or Africa.

Canadaalso stood out this year for being the “freest country in the world” with itstolerance of immigrants, minorities, freedom of expression and beliefs.

In fact, an overwhelming percentage of Canadians -- 92 per cent -- agreed thattheir country is a good place for immigrants, and another 94 per cent said theybelieve that they have the freedom to choose the course of their own lives.

Analysts also noted that Indonesiahas become the fastest-rising country on the index, driven by a vibranteconomy, easier internet access and improved living standards. The emergingcountry rose 21 places on the index over the last seven years.

As for the US,the country earned the dubious distinction of being the only Western country toregister high levels of “state-sponsored political violence.” The events of thepast year -- the Baltimore protests and Ferguson unrest -- pushed the country down to 33rd spot inthe safety and security sub-category, making it comparable to Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and El Salvador.

I find it interesting that the 10 most prosperous countries are all SOCIALIST democracies. This kind of flies in the face of those who seem to think that capitalism and low taxes are the key to prosperity . . .
